Sand Play Therapy at the Beach

Child and Adolescent Therapy Services

The Power of Play

Unlike adults who may prefer to talk about their problems, children will more naturally use play to communicate their internal world and needs. This is why Play Therapy is a highly effective approach when working with children and adolescents. Play is a symbolic language that allows the child to make sense of their inner world and explore life experiences in a safe space (the therapy room).  Play Therapy also helps the child to explore their self image and moves them towards self acceptance, which establishes their self worth. Some of the tools and techniques used in play therapy are: body movement, drawings, paintings, fantasy, games, metaphors or storytelling, music, playing with clay, puppets and sand.

Gestalt Play Therapy

Gestalt Play Therapy, developed by Violet Oaklander, helps children develop sensory awareness so that they can become aware of the feelings in their body. Sensory awareness is crucial for child development and influences a child’s contact with their environment. When a child feels safe to make contact with their surroundings, they are then able to improve their internal resources and build self confidence.  With this new strong sense of self, they are better equipped to express any suppressed emotions and can learn healthy ways to manage their emotions. At Bluebird MFT, we teach children emotional regulation skills so that they can self-soothe and have the power to choose how they want to respond to others.

EMDR and Brainspotting for Children & Adolescents

EMDR and Brainspotting are well supported evidenced-based practices for treating children with PTSD, attachment issues, or difficulties with self-regulation. They are effective techniques for treating symptoms related to guilt, anger, depression, and anxiety; and can be used to boost a child's self esteem and confidence. Our brains have the amazing ability to heal themselves and these techniques will help their brains do just that.

Group Therapy for Children & Adolescents

Group Therapy helps children and teens get the support they need from their peers and a licensed therapist. They learn from each other and the therapist by discussing issues they have in common and participating in group activities. Groups help children to connect with others and develop important life skills, which will help them at home and in school.
